Game: UFC 221
Date: Sat, Feb 10, 2018
Time: 6: 30 p.m. ET
UFC 221 was slated to be a celebration of all things Robert Whittaker. However, the UFC middleweight champ was sidelined with a litany of injuries, meaning Yoel Romerowas parachuted in to take on Luke Rockhold for the interim middleweight championship. However, with the Cuban missing weight, now only Rockhold is eligible to win the interim belt.
Though the main card is a dynamic match-up, the remainder of the pay-per-view cards leaves a lot to be desired (considering the near $70 price tag). The co-main sees the return of heavyweight legend Mark Hunt, who takes on the upstart Curtis Blaydes. Before that, exciting heavyweight Tai Tuivasa meets Cyril Asker, Jake Matthews takes on Li Jingliang at 170lbs, and Tyson Pedro fights Saparbek Safarov in the light heavyweight division.
FS1 prelims, which begin at 8 PM ET (local crowd be damned), end with lightweight Damien Brown hunting for a Fight of the Night bonus versus the Maestro Dong Hyun Kim. The rest of that card sees Israel Adesanya debut versus Rob Wilkinson at 185lbs, Alex Volkanovski take on Jeremy Kennedy at 145lbs, and Jussier Formiga face Ben Nguyen at 125lbs.
There are three UFC Fight Pass Early Prelims tonight. The featured early prelim is a clash of veterans with Ross Pearson vs. Mizuto Hirota in the lightweight division. The first two fights of the night are Teruto Ishihara vs. Jose Quinonez (135lbs) and Luke Jumeau vs. Daichi Abe (170lbs).
